Universal Joints

Ruland universal joints transmit torque between shafts that are not in perfect alignment. They handle angular or parallel shaft misalignment and are ideal where compact or extended shaft spacing is required.

Single universal joints accommodate angular misalignment up to about 45° and are best when space is limited. Double universal joints use two joints with a center yoke, allowing up to 90° of misalignment and the ability to correct parallel offset between shafts.

These joints are offered with friction (plain) bearings or needle bearings. Friction-bearing designs are suited for moderate-to-high torque and many general industrial drives, while needle-bearing versions provide lower friction and longer life at higher speeds and lighter loads.

Standard joints are precision-machined from high-grade alloy steel or stainless steel for strength and corrosion resistance. They are available with or without keyways in bore sizes from 3/16″ to 2″ and 5 mm to 35 mm, with machinable bores, inch-to-metric conversions, and step bores available on special order.

Ruland universal joints sold through PIB are produced under ISO 9001:2015 quality systems and are listed as compliant with RoHS3, REACH, and Conflict Minerals requirements, helping meet common OEM and export standards.

Optional boot covers are available to seal the joint, retain lubricant, and protect against contaminants. PIB also lists recommended grease (such as LUBRIPLATE No. 1200-2) for ongoing lubrication, which can significantly extend operating life and reduce maintenance.
